DARING THEFT FROM BAR
THIEF POSES AS EMPLOYEE
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 26. Customers in a bar of the Royal Oak Hotel, Wellington, unwittingly looked on this afternoon while a thief took about j£l3 from cash registers behind the counter. A group of three men were standing at the bar when a stranger joined them. He talked for a while before saying. “Well, I suppose I had better go and do some work.” He then leapt over the bar tmd quickly operated the nearest cash register, while the barman on duty at tha*t section was away for a minute. With bank notes in his hand he opened the next cash register in the line, took some more money, and leapt back across the counter. He then made for the door.
There was a barman present, but he was busy with customers further along the bar. He heard the cash register bells ring, but thought it was the other barman working them.
