SHORTAGE OF STAFF Because of the serious shortage of domestic staff. Weir House, the Victoria University College men’s hostel, in Wellington, may have difficulty in keeping open. The present staff consists only of a matron and a submatron. Two cooks, a kitchen general, and three pantry-maids are needed, but though there is an attractive cottage capable of accommodating 16 persons available for domestic staff, advertisements have brought no results. Forty students are now in residence at the hostel, and this number will increase as the start of the university year approaches. With the staff shortage it has been found impossible to provide these students with more than morning tea and toast, leaving them to get the rest of their meals wherever they can.
