CALLS TO FIRES

OLD WOODEN BUILDING GUTTED

Fanned by a high north-west wind, fire destroyed an old wooden building and two motor-cars, and threatened the Church Army Hostel for Boys, at 195-199 Antigua street early yesterday morning. The Christchurch Central Eire Brigade received calls by street alarm and telephone at 2.13 a.m., but the building, which is at the back of the hostel, was a mass of flames when the engines arrived. The brigade concentrated on keeping the fire from spreading to the hostel. The gutted building was an old single-storey structure, divided into two garages, and three stores and a workshop. One car belonged to a member of the staff in the hostel, and one was an old vehicle which had been in a shed for about 15 years. At 2.8 a.m. yesterday, the brigade was called to a restaurant at 179 Manchester street, owned by Mr William Austin Little, where a fire was caused by fat igniting. Slight damage w T as done to the contents of the premises. At 6.31 a.m. the brigade extinguished » n 7 eon sign at Supply Stores. Ltd., 420 Colombo street. Only slight damage was done. A grass fire on the property of Mr Alister Patrick Boyle, 42 Middleton r ? a o 9 P pper Riccarton, was dealt with at 2.33 p.m., and a call was received to another grass Are at 7 Shakespeare road, at 5.39 p.m. No damage was done. At 6.17 p.m. the brigade extinguished a rubbish fire on a section in Centaurus road, owned by Mr Victor Dockery.
