MAGISTRATE’S COURT
WEDNESDAY (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) THREE MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT George Maurice Meikle, aged 27, a labourer, of Hanmer Springs, appeared for sentence on a charge of obtaining from Mary Margaret Todd, a motor tyre valued at £5 ss, lay false pretences. Detective-Sergeant A. B. Tate said that Meikle took possession of the tyre, saying he would send a cheque by post in payment. He gave a false name and address. Meikle was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour, the sentence to be additional to one of a year imposed in the Supreme Court yesterday for forgery. NAME SUPPRESSED For stealing one pound of butter valued at Is 6d, a woman, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months. DRUNK IN PUBLIC PLACE. Dorothy Eileen Pearl Neill was fined £l, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment, for being found drunk in a public place, having been convicted once previous of the same offence in the last six months. Francis Domini was fined £2 for a similar offence. NO BUILDING PERMIT D. E. Goulding was fined £5 for proceeding with the erection of a shop at 423 Main South road, Hornby, without a building permit. Mr P. T. Mahon, for the Building Controller, said that the work had apparently been begun before Goulding applied for a permit.
