TROTTING CONTROL

Sir.—All true sportsmen and sportswomen in New Zealand owe Mr J. R. McKenzie a debt of gratitude for ex-' posing the weaknesses existing under the present stipendiary stewards’ con-, trol of trotting. In the published list of cases quoted by him at the last meeting of the Trotting Association he showed ample proof of the inefficient control of trotting. The committee ot the Sports Patrons’ Association (Canterbury) could quote additional cases, including some of inconsistent running being entirely overlooked. My association was formed primarily to raise the standard of all sport in New Zealand, by offering constructive criticism and generally assisting to clean up existing breaches of the rules and irregularities. My committee contends that until the method of appointment and representation of the stipendiary stewards is altered control will remain unsatisfactory, in fact, deteriorate. How can stipendiary stewards be reasonably expected to deal with horses owned by the very officials who appoint them? —Yours etc.. C. C. McLACHLAN, Secretary (pro tem.), Sports Patrons’ Association (Canterbury). December 15, 1948.
