THE KING’S 53RD BIRTDHAY

MANY MESSAGES TO PALACE LONDON, December 14. Messages of congratulation and good wishes from all parts of the Empire reached the King at Buckingham Palace to-day on his fifty-third birthday. Flags were flown on Government offices and public buildings, but there were no other official celebrations.

The King spent the morning quietly at the palace, carrying out his usual routine of State business.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester joined His Majesty at his birthday luncheon with the Queen, Princess Elizabeth, Prinqess Margaret and the Duke of Edinburgh. The Duke of Gloucester later flew to Holland where he is staying as the guest of Prince Bernhard.
