CURRENT NOTES
The Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) and Mrs Holland, will be the guests of the National Club at its Christmas party to-day. The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) will officially open the fete to be held in Latimer square on Saturday in aid of the Karitane Hospital fund. From the proceeds of its annual ball held last month the Junior branch of the Navy League, at its meeting last evening, decided to give £lOO to the Sea Cadet Corps and to send a parcel of woollen clothing this month to the English boy in Stepney, London, that the branch has sponsored. Miss Natalie Vale presided, and the 80 members present were entertained by Mr J. Williamson (magician).
The death occurred in Auckland yesterday morning of Mrs F. B. Allen, mother of F. R. Allen, captain of next year’s All Blacks. Mrs Allen had been in hospital since August 8, when she was injured in a motor accident. She is survived by her husband, three sons and three daughters.—(P.A.) Pupils of Te Wai Pounamu were the guests of Canon and Mrs Nelham Watson and parishioners of Glenmark, at Glcnmark vicarage, recently. After a picnic lunch, a' sports meeting was held, and in the afternoon the guests entertained their hosts with a programme of Maori songs and poi dances. The winning house in the sports was Mataatua, with an average of 6.8 a girl. Te Arawa, averaging 6.7 a girl, was second. The senior champion was Christina Bates, with Parematau Smallman runner-up. Taini Waitiri was junior champion, and Rena Wixon runner-up. Afternoon tea was served by the hosts.
