TRAVEL CLUB

CHRISTMAS PARTY The Travel Club’s Christmas party, a very successful and enjoyable gathering, was held last evening at the Winter Garden, which had been festively decorated for the occasion by Mesdames A. Rose, E. Boulton, H. S. Feast, Gordon Gunn. O. C. Harley and helpers. The president (Sir Joseph Ward) welcomed the guests, among whom were the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), the Mayoress. (Mrs F. Hardy Cookson), Mr Cookson, and Dr. and Mrs H. R. Hulme. He also welcomed Mrs H. A. Young, a member o»f the executive who through illhealth, has been absent from Travel Club gatherings for a year. Novel entertainment was provided by members of the club’s entertainment committee, who presented a parade of representatives of different countries, wearing national dress. The parade was compered by. Mrs Cecil Wood. Miss Helen Hodgins sang appropriate songs with accompaniments by Mrs J. C. Cullman and those taking part were DJesdames J. Erwin (New Zealand), Arnold Beanland (Holland), R. Wynne-Owen (Wales), A. M. Vile (Spain), John Stewart (Ireland), Miss M. Ellyett (Scotland), Mesdames D. R. Thomson (India), J. Denford (America). T. Raffle (Persia), H. E. Goggin (China), and Hugh Fraer (Britannia).

A musical programme, arranged by Mrs Cullman was provided’ by Mr Colin Campbell, Miss Janette Buxton, and Mr A. Zeigler, each of whom sang three songs and a too (Mrs A. Ayling, Mrs E. T. Hill, and Miss Hodgins) who sang Christmas carols. Mrs Cullman and Mrs Campbell were the accompanists.

The speaker was Dr. Hulme, who arrived in Christchurch from England about six weeks ago to take up the post of academic head of Canterbury University College. He spoke light-heartedly of his experiences during the years of war, when he was engaged on scientific work of grave importance and told many good stories about persons he had met and places he had visited. He had, he said, moved his home 10 times during the war and had travelled 15,000 miles by aircraft, ships and jeeps. Mr J. Wyn Irwin thanked Dr. Hulme for his address and Mrs M. H. Godby thanked those who had presented the musical programme.
