PLATINUM WEDDING

MR AND MRS J. PYCROFT Mr and Mrs J. Pycroft (Opawa) will celebrate the 65th. anniversary of their wedding to-day. They were married in the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church on December 8, 1883, and both have lived in New Zealand for more than 70 years. Mr Pycroft came from his birthplace, Portsmouth, in the sailing ship Waitangi in 1878, and Mrs Pycroft had arrived in Christchurch from her home in Hull, Yorkshire, by the Rakaia five years earlier. Twice since their arrival in the Domonion Mr and Mrs Pycroft have visited England, the last occasion being shortly before they celebrated their golden wedding. Until his retirement 22 years ago Mr Pycroft was engaged in the building trade at Lyttelton. For many years he was a member of the Opawa School Committee and took an active interest in the Canterbury School Committees’ Association, of which he is the oldest living life member. He is also a life member of the Canterbury Automobile Association.

Mr and Mrs Pycroft have lived in Cholmondeley avenue, Opawa, for the last 41 years. Their only daughter, Miss Alice Pycroft, is a school teacher in Christchurch. ,
