PROTECTION OF TAKAHE
SIGHTSEERS URGED TO KEEP AWAY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. A plea that sightseers, mountaineers, and trampers should not visit the Lake Te Anau area in search of the takahe was made to-day by the secretary of the Forest and Bird Protection Society (Mr R. H. Carter). “Nature is bringing back into circulation one of its denizens which, for many years, has been so rare as to have been thought extinct,” said Mr Carter. “Nature must have some reason for this and man has no right for curiosity, greed, or any other motive to molest these birds. “Even if a number of people go to look at them they are liable to disturb them to such an extent as to prejudice their chances of survival, be added.
