FIRST PHOTOGRAPH OF A TAKAHE.—-This photograph of a male takahe, or notornis, a rare flightless bird formerly thought to be extinct, was taken in the Te Anau district by Dr. G. B. Orbell, of Invercargill. The bird is about 18 inches high and weighs five pounds. It was caught with another takahe and was released after being photographed. Until last week-end no takahe had been reported in the Te Anau district since 1898.
