ITEMS ON ESTIMATES (P-A.) WELLINGTON. Nov. 23. The police section of the Supplementary Estimates introduced in the House of Representatives to-day has an item of £lll payable to a person for wrongful arrest. • In the vote for the Navy Department, there is an item of £25 for repairs to private property damaged by a saluting battery. The sum of £35 is to be voted from the estimates of the Department of Lands and Survey as compensation for livestock accidentally poisoned. A footnote says that refuse from a woolsued owned t?y the department was placed on a settler’s property with his authority. It transpired that the refuse contained a poisonous substance, an <J as a result three dairy cows died. The Army Department’s estimates contain a vote of £5B for the services of a Greek interpreter. This is for services rendered to the 2nd N-Z.E.F. during the campaign in Greece. There is £267 for improvement to a war weapon. This is stated to be required to meet the payment of a further claim approved on the recommendation of. a committee which investigated the matter. Estimates for the Ministry of Works c ? n , t v in £125,000 for tornado damage at Hamilton, but this is part recoverable.
More than £5OOO is provided for compensation for injuries to two mental hospital patients. One grant of £ 1309 is to be paid to the Public Trustee for a patient who received injuries to his hand while a patient of the Kingseat Hospital and another in the unauthorised expenditure account provides £4lOB as payment for injuries received by a patient in the Porirua Mental Hospital.
