SPECIMENS FOR MUSEUM

Many specimens have been received by the Canterbury Museum in the last month. The director (Mr R. S. Duff) reported on some to the Museum Trust Board yesterday. “Mr C. B. Thacker has handed over on loan two unique relics from Okain’s Bay. and from Mr C. F. Craw, of Chorlton. I purchased a collection of bone and greenstone artifacts made by the Maoris of Long Lookout point immediately before their destruction by Te Rauparaha in 1831 or 1832,’’ said Mr Duff in his report. “Of unusual interest for a period when there were no Europeans in Canterbury is the inclusion of a British coin dated 1826 and a sailor’s buckle. “Of particular note are models of a four-masted barque, a modern passenger liner and cargo steamer made by the late Mr H. E. Coldbeck, and presented by his widow: and a rare discoid slate knife from Te Akatarewa moa-hunters’ camp, Waitaki Gorge, presented by Dr. P. B. Maling.” :
