DEATH ON 100th BIRTHDAY

MR JQHN WORKMAN, OF TIMARU GREETINGS FROM THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, October 28. Mr John Workman, of Timaru, died at 11 p.m. this evening, on his 100th birthday. He has been in good health recently, but he developed bronchitis after a cold. Among several dozen messages of greeting delivered to his home to-day was one from the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Freyberg), which read: “Her Excellency and I send you our warm congratulations and good wishes on the celebration to-day of your 100th birthday.” A message was received from Penrith, in Cumberland, where Mr Workman was born, from a niece. Among the gifts was a birthday cake from the Mayor and Mayoress of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan and Mrs Hanan). Mr Workman’s sons, Messrs William and Ernest Workman, of Christchurch, came to see him.
