The Sale Friesians were first offered and met a Readier demand than the other two main breeds. Good quality bulls of all ages were in steady demand throughout, but others without much background attracted only passing interest. Only four lots were passed in. and sales were made to buyers from the West Coast and Marlborough in addition to the usual Banks Peninsula. Ellesmere, and North Canterbury sources. Milking Shorthorns were practically unwanted. and half of the offering failed to reach venders’ reserves. One or two outstanding animals attracted good prices, but in the main values were several guineas below last year. The demand for many of the Jerseys was in keeping with the quality of many of the entries. Good lots offered early in the sale sold at prices on a par with last rear, but halfway through most buyers eppeared to have filled requirements, and lots were either passed in or sold at values several guineas below opening rates. Top price was 65 guineas for an outstanding yearling from the West Coast, which arrived too late for the show. The champion yearling made only 47J guineas, and the champion older bull was passed in at 60 guineas. Bulls were distributed over a fairly wide area. The Land and Survey Department was In the market strongly at times for good bulls in all sections. These are probably reouired for soldier settlement farms. The only Ayrshire offered was an outItanding yearling, and met spirited competition before being finally knocked down to the Land and Survey Department. The range of prices for each breed, with those for last year, were: —
