INDONESIAN TRADE
All commercial imports into Indonesia require a foreign exchange permit and an import declaration, and all exports are subject to export licences, says a circular on trade with Indonesia, issued through the Netherlands Vice-Consulate in Christchurch. No preferential customs duties are applicable to imports. In principle, exporters cannot dispose freely of foreign exchange they acquire through their export transactions, nor, generally speaking, can “compensation transactions” be allowed. The export trade, as such, is free; that is, anyone can export goods. On the other hand, the import trade is still governed by the shortage of foreign exchange. In the issue of permits for imports, pre-war importers are given a certain amount of preference. but newcomers are also being considered. The latter are primarily newly-established Indonesian firms, the aim being to develop an Indonesian class of importers.
