TECHNICAL COLLEGE EXPANSION

Many new developments were seen at the Christchurch Technical College yesterday, when hundreds of parents attended the annual display of work and activities. Accompanied by their children, they were permitted to see all classes at work and to watch special displays presented throughout the day. The principal (Dr. D. E. Hansen) mentioned the growth of the college when he welcomed visitors. Much new equipment was being installed or on order to make the facilities for teaching among the most modern in the Dominion, he said. For commercial classes nearly £lOOO worth of equipment was being acquired for use next /year. This would complete a range of adding, calculating, and bookkeeping machines to give experience in all departments of modern office practice. Dr. Hansen also described the rapid expansion of musical training and appreciation in the college, which now nad symphony, senior, and junior orchestras, a band, and various choral groups. During the day, orchestral and band items, drill, and gymnastic displays were given. In the afternoon parents watched pupils in the mechanical and electrical engineering, cabinet-making, carpentry and joinery, drawing, printing, cookery, dressmaking, arts and crafts, and commercial rooms and inspected samples of their work. An unusual exhibit was shown by senior home science pupils and homecraft teaohertrainees. They had prepared balanced meals for children ranging from three years of age to early ’teens, with descriptive material on nutritive values. There were outstanding features of needlework and crafts. The acting chairman of the board (Mr W. T. Langley) spoke at the evening sessiqn. Senior trainees were seen in evening classes for pharmacy, welding, motor engineering, plumbing, and other trader Educational films were shown throughout the day with the college’s own projector.
