DARES
Sir, —At school we boys used to dare each other. Canterbury dare not. She ought to be the leading province. The other centres have hills to hinder. Where else are there so many bicycles? Why not harness the Waimakariri? Make it yield electricity. Also use it to scour depth of water for ships to enter a canal. Fill in the estuary with rock brought down by gravity from the cliffs. Put workshops, offices, etc. there. Let the Waimakariri. Avon and Heathcote unite in one effluent. The early settlers had a canal reserve. Use it. so.- Let our railways have a five-foot gauge and all electric. Catch the Takahe hoodlums and birch them. —Yours, etc., PANAMA GANGER. September 25, 1948.
