COMPLAINT BY MR HACKETT
RACING OFFICIAL’S COMMENTS
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 25. The Auckland Racing Club took the only course possible under the rules of racing, said the president of the club (Dr- A. M. McGregor Grant), when a complaint, made in the House of Representatives by the PostmasterGeneral (Mr F. Hackett), was referred to him. Mr Hackett had said he had known of racing clubs in New Zealand which had deliberately robbed people of the chance of winning. He had referred to an incident at a recent meeting of the Auckland Racing Club when a favourite that ran second was disqualified after weighing in, and the trainer-was fined £lO for failing to put weights in the saddle. Mr Grant said that was not the only case of that kind that had occurred through the carelessness of the trainer. The horse was weighed out correctly, but the trainer failed to put lead in the bag. Had he done so it was possible that the result of the race might have been different. Clubs had to adhere to the rules of racing.'
