APPLE AND PEAR MARKETING
BOARD OF FIVE TO BE ESTABLISHED From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, September 24. An agreement on the future marketing of apples and pears has been reached between the Fruitgrowers’ Federation and the Government. A board of five members will be established under legislation to be introduced this session. The board will consist of two members nominated by the industry, two nominated by the Government, and a chairman to be nominated by the Government. The board will be empowered to acquire and market all apples and pears grown in New Zealand or imported. It will have a discretionary power to permit direct sales to consumers. In the exercise of its functions the board is to comply with the general trade policy of the Government, and with any general or special directions given by the Minister pursuant to Government policy. The agreement also contains provision for a financial guarantee to growers. The board will have the responsibility before the start of each season of advising the Minister as to the movement in costs up to assembly P'Xnt. and after consultation with' the board the Minister of Marketing is to declare < a cost of production for the ensuing year.
