N.Z. ETHNOLOGIST HONOURED

MR JOHANNES C. ANDERSEN (P.A.) PALMERSTON N., Sept 26. Mr Johannes C. Andersen, the worldfamous ethnologist, was honoured by King Frederick IX of Denmark with the bestowal of the Order of the Knight of Dannebrog for his outstanding service to the land of his birth, Denmark, and to his adopted country, New Zealand. The honour was conferred on Mr Andersen at a meeting

of the Palmerston North Danish Association, by King Frederick’s representative, Mr Carl Eskelund, Danish Con-sul-General for New Zealand. It was the first time such an honour had been conferred in New Zealand, and Mr Andersen was not aware he was to receive it when, at the request of the consul-general, he made the journey from Auckland. Palmerston North was chosen for the ceremony because of the strength of its Danish Association.

A world authority on Polynesia, Mr Andersen has devoted his life to study of the islands of the South Pacific, Maori folk lore, and New Zealand natural history, and, has published many works on these subjects.
