THREE REARED ON OTAGO

PENINSULA (P.A.) DUNEDIN. September 23. Three royal albatross chicks have been reared this year on the OtaW Peninsula. Nowhere else in the world do these birds nest so close to populated One of the three has already floiHhi and the other two should soon foiled it Since 1937 15 chicks have been reared, but in recent years difficulty has been experienced in protecting the birds from the public and predatory animals. Often people have caused unconscious damage by wandering in the area and not allowing the birds to settle. The Department of. Internal Affairs and the Otago Harbour Board .are determined to Keep the sanctuary closed to all sightseers and in the last few days the department has been busy erecting a protective fence round the area. The ranger now keeps watch for intruders and under a special bylaw of the Harbour‘Board a penalty of £2O may be imposed on anyone found in the area.
