ROAD PASSENGER SERVICES
STATE EXPANSION NOTED
(P.A.) NAPIER. September 23. “Nationalisation has encroached further in this industry than into any other not completely taken over by the State.” said the chairman of the council (Mr J. Newman. Nelson), in a report to the annual conference of the New Zealand Passenger Services’ Federation yesterday. “The Government-owned services now operate 36.3 per cent, of service cars, 57 per cent, of service coaches, and 19.3 .per cent, of omnibuses in the Dominion,” he continued. “There is a strong feeling that completion between the'State and private enterprise can never be on a fair basis, in view of preferences, which include the legislative protection of State services on certain routes, and priorities for certain extensions.” The council elected bv the conference was as follows: Messrs F. G. Tebav (chairman, Napier). W. R. Wigley (Timaru). C. L. Edwards (Auckland). J. H. Bennett (New Plymouth). J. P. Warren (Waitara), J. Newman (Nelson), A. C. Tate (Orewa). J. S. Ballinger (Otaki), T. S. Couper (Taupo), and G. Newton (Invercargill).
