RANGIORA HIGH SCHOOL
MR J. F. MOFFAT NEW PRINCIPAL Mr Johnston Flucker Moffat, M.Sc., 8.A., Dip. Ed., at present head of the science department at the Waitaki Boys’ High School, has been appointed principal of the Rangiora High School, in succession to Mr J, E. Strachan, 0.8. E., who will retire at the end of the year. Sixty-one applications for the position were considered by the high school board. Mr Moffat received his primary education at the Normal School, Christchurch, and his post-primary schooling at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, where he gained a university
bursary. In 1925, two years after he had left high school, he completed his B.Sc. degree while attending the Christchurch Training College, and in 1928 gained his M.Sc. degree. In 1946 Mr Moffat completed the examinations for the Diploma of Education, and he obtained his B.A. in 1947.
Mr Moffat received his commission in the Ist Canterbury Battalion in 1927. When Japan entered the ' war he was sent to Fiji as a Company Commander with the 37th Battalion. 2nd N.Z.E.F. Later he served in New Caledonia. Guadalcanar and Vella Lavella. Promoted to lieutenant-colonel, he commanded the 35th Battalion. He later served with this battalion on Nissan Island.
In September. 1945. he was appointed honorary aide-de-camp to the Governor-General of New Zealand (Sir Cyri] Newall). Mr Moffat has played senior cricket and football in Christhurch in the Old Boys’ clubs, and was chief physical training instructor at Burnham Military Camp in 1940.
