MEMORIAL CUP

CANTERBURY AERO CLUB Mrs B. Shirreff-Hilton has presented to the Canterbury Aero Club a cup in memory of her son, Giles Shirreff-Hil-ton, who was the first club member to gain his A licence when flying was resumed at Harewood after the war. The cup will be known as the Giles Shirreff-Hilton Memorial Cup, and will be awarded to the junior club pilot gaining the most points in club competitions. Mr Shirreff-Hilton, who died early this year, was a nephew of the late Mrs A. Brustad. who, as Miss Aroha Clifford, was the first clubtrained woman pilot in New Zealand. At a meeting of the committee of the women’s section of the Returned Services’ Association held in the Jellicoe Hall, Mrs H. A. Bishop (president) asked members to collect articles for a jumble sale to be held soon. Arrangements were made to pack parcels for Britain at the next afternoon social. Sympathy was expressed with Miss E. M. Cuthbert and Mrs M. Everest. who are ill. The lady editor of “The Press” acknowledges a donation of £1 from “Sister” for. the new building for pensioners. The donation has been sent to Mrs E. Dorn, secretary of the Pensioners* Association.
