What he called a growing tendency to make Anzac Day a holiday was attacked by Mr W. H. Gillespie (Opposition, Hurunui) in the House of Representatives last evening. He said the practice had grown since 1929 of taking Monday as a holiday if Anzac Day fell on a Sunday and specific provision for this was made in 23 awards. An effort was also being made to have the holiday observed on a Monday if Anzac Day fell on a Saturday. Anzac Day should not be allowed to be turned into a holiday, and a Government which permitted it should not be allowed to govern. Workers who took advantage of Anzac Dav were “cashing in on those fellows who laid down their lives for their country.”— (F.0.P.R.)
