CANTERBURY’S NARROW WIN
GOOD EXHIBITION BY UNIVERSITIES Faced with a strong Canterbury eleven; New Zealand Universities did well to be only beaten by the odd goal in five, in the curtain-raiser to the test match at Lancaster Park on Saturday. The side was picked after heavy engagements in the University football tournament last week and little opportunity had been given the side to solidify its combination. As it was the team was overshadowed somewhat by Canterbury in the first half but, after the interval, gave a better display. With a little luck the final result might easily have been reversed. The standard of play showed that University football has made a remarkable progress in recent years, reflecting credit on both the players and coaches. The outstanding player was undoubtedly P. Iles, who gave a great exhibition of brilliant anticipation and faultless handling between the posts. His full-backs worked hard and effectively, with Nettleton prominent as a third back when the occasion warranted it. The wing halves were always in evidence with the wellplaced kicks of Naidu, a feature of the match. Kibblewhite showed speed and penetration at centre forward, and both wing men, although faced by a solid pair of backs, put in some handy runs. Payne, at inside half, was always constructive. Qasevakatini, who played Hare foot, frequently troubled the home defence.. Canterbury played well but in the more or less individual bursts in the second spell its performance fell off. The defence was solid and the halves gave the forwards everv opportunity. Of the forwards C. Bailey and K. Smith were the most enterprising, although McLellan, McAnulty, and O. Rowe played constructively. C. Bailey (3) scored for Canterbury, and A. Kibblewhite and K. B. Payne for New Zealand Universities. The teams were:— . Canterbury.—A. Laing; M. . Dean, E. Harris; A. McAnulty, T. Jones, A. Souter; J. McLennan, G. McAnulty, C. Bailey, J. CRawe, R. Smith. , „ New Zealand Universities.—P. Iles (A.U.C.); K. Johnstone (V.U.C.), D. Laws (A.U.C.), J. Gale (A.U.C.), J.
