COMMUNITY CENTRE AT MOUNT PLEASANT

OBJECTION RECEIVED BY CITY COUNCIL

A petition signed by a number of ratepayers and residents of Mount Pleasant protesting against a proposal that a community centre should be built on reclaimed land at the junction of McCormick’s Bay road and the causeway was received by the City Council last evening. The main reasons for the objection to the site, the petition stated, were the closeness of such a building to homes, and the “injustice of introducing a hall into a residential area, with the resultant depreciation property values.” There was always a nuisance with any hall used at night, and any noise at the foot of the Tiill could be heard clearly by residents in a wide area., Alternative sites were available, it was stated, and it was felt that the whole of the reclaimed area should be reserved as a sports ground. Many persons had gone to live on the hill for health reasons,' and peace and' quietness were essential for some. The council referred the petition to the reserves committee.
