TYPISTS’ SALARIES

AUCKLAND DISCUSSION “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, August 23. “A salary of £362 a ytear is very big for a typist; there are many married men who are not getting that,” said Mr A. W. Joughin at a meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Board to-day during a discussion on proposals to increase the salaries of the board’s office staff. The chairman (Mr A. S. Bailey) said that both the City Council and Government awards for female office workers were higher than the one for the board. Mr Joughin: There would be very few senior typists lin New Zealand getting as much as £7 a weex. Mr Bailey said he was paying £8 a week for a senior female office assistant. It was not a question of being generous, but one of necessity.' “If we don’t pay these salaries we just won’t have the staff,” he said. The proposed increases w6re approved.
