OFFICIAL FORECASTS “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, August 23. The weather forecast for Canterbury, Issued at 9 p.m.» by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 20 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: Situation: a deep and complex low pressure trough is advancing eastwards across the Tasman. Forecast: moderate northerly winds inland, moderate to fresh north-easterlies near the coast. Weather fair to cloudy. Temperatures cool. WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is:— Fresh northerly winds. Weather unsettled with occasional showers, heavy this afternoon in the south. Temperatures cool. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER After a wet morning, the weather cleared in Christchurch and was fine though cool (maximum temperature 51.3 degrees), with an east wind. The sky was overcast at midnight. There was a northerly breeze and the maximum temperature was 46.8 degrees. The barometer, at 29.53 in (1000.1 millibars) was falling unsteadily.
