MATINEE MEETING AT GREYMOUTH

ALOYSIUS IN FORM Driven by W. J. Davidson, Aloysius gave an impressive display to win the International Pace by half a length from Skyhook at the West Coast Owners’ and Breeders’ Association's matinee meeting at Greymouth on Saturday. Starting brilliantly from the 60 yards mark, Aloysius was soon handy to Sandbird and Skyhook, which were setting the pace. After taking the lead with five furlongs to go, Aloysius stayed on well to win without being extended from Skyhook, which was eight lengths clear of Sandbird.

An aged mare, Aloysius showed good form last season when trained by W. R. Butt for Mr J. Steel, to gain three wins and three minor placings. Sandbird and Phoebe's Pride drew clear of the field over the concluding stages. In an interesting finish. Sandbird held on to win by half a length from Phoebe’s Pride with Hazard Queen 12 lengths away in third place. By Sandydale, Sandbird is a half-brother tn Aloysius Novice Trot Barbara Woods, Globe Queen and Hardy Annual were the only starters in the Novice Trot Handicap. paraded at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association’s trials at Addington on Thursday. After breaking at the start of the 3min 52sec pace, Agricola showed a lot of speed. A racy type, he still has a lot to learn, but once he settles down he should win his share of races.
