THREE-YEAR-OLD FORM

RACING

PROMISING displays at RICCARTON rhe maiden ind the hack races at the nrand National meeting generally bring 2* light some useful three-year-olds and IL meeting just concluded was no exSntion. In fact n 1S doubtful whether fhere have been so many promising three-‘fpar-olds round Riccarton for a few vears. wiecarton stables naturally provided the Znaioritv of the runners in the Cashmere Plate and the Aylesbury Handicaps, but Jj ere was a strong representation of visitCashmere Plate the division winall had a few races as two-year* St. Bruno, the winner of the first H vision, was a pa rticularly fast two-year-°d He first attracted attention in the two-year-old parade at Riccarton last tear A few weeks later he ran fourth <n the McLean Stakes at Wingatui and ihird in the Juvenile Stakes. After whipping round at the start in the Winton stakes last November he did not race again until he rar. unplaced in the Haldon crakes at the Hunt Club meeting. In ♦he meantime he has developed into a solidly made colt and he is likely to crore a useful three-year-old. He is a brown dblt by Salmagundi from Philaster by Philamor from Helen Hunt, a Hunting Song mare from the same family as Reremoana and Lady Cavendish. She bred two useful performers in Atreus and Theiolyn. St. Bruno is trained bv H. A. Anderton for Dr. A. A. Reid. Gives Promise of Staying » Resolute, the runner-up to St. Bruno, was improved by the race, and. on the second day, won the second division of the Aylesbury Handicap in good style. Resolute had six races as a two-year-old for two thirds. His best effort was to finish half a length behind Top Deck ancK Magical in the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton. Resolute has developed a good deal since then and will do so further yet. He has invariably been running on in his races and he will do better when he races beyond sprints. Conclusion, third to St. Bruno anef Resolute, had two races at the New Zealand Cun meeting, and did not race again until he ran second to Idle Jest in the Haldon Stakes at the Hunt Club’s meeting. Unfortunately, .Conclusion showed a disinclination to line up at the barrier last Saturday and was left, but he mav be induced to settle down, though his dam had a similar failing. Conclusion is a solidly made, medium-sized colt by Finis from Good Passage, by Winning Hit from the New Zealand and Auckland Cup winner. Fast Passage. He may eventually stay in accordance with his breeding. Conclusion was bred at the Stonyhurst Stud, and is trained by A. Cutts, who also produced Disturbance, the winner of the second division of the Cashmere Plate A Smart Filly

Disturbance has done little racing, but she is one of the smartest fillies at Riccarton. In her only appearance as a two-year-old she ran fourth in the Autumn Nursery Handicap at Riccarton behind Musselman, Idle Jest, and Ann Bridge. In the Cashmere Plate Disturbance won her division with consummate ease and with a better run in the Longbeach Handicap last Saturday would have made Pierre’s task more difficult. Disturbance is a bav filly by Defaulter from the Winning Hit mare Fracas, which was a fine race mare in her day. She won 15 races in- I eluding the C.J.C Jockey Club Handicap, Champagne Stakes and Challenge Stakes, Disturbance is a little on the small side, but not much more so than her dam. Profane, the runner-up to Disturbance is a brown gelding by Probation from Hot Speech, by Oration from Fireclay, the granddam of a good race mare in Alethea, which won 15 races including the New Zealand Oaks and the A.R.C. Cornwall Handicap. Profane was unplaced in his ax starts as a two-year-old, and the best will not be seen of him until he races over longer distances this season. He is a wellgrown and solidly-made gelding and a good sensible type. ' « Peridot, third in the second division, covered a lot of extra ground. He showed Improvement on the second day when he finished very fast into second place behind Resolute in the Aylesbury Handicap, and Was obviously suited by the additional furlong. Peridot is a chestnut gelding by Christopher Robin from Sigma, by Psychology from War Scare, a Martian mare that was a half-sister to the noted Bobrikoff. He is a nicely-balanced gelding and has plenty of size in his favour. Peridot was taken along very quietly as a two-year-old and he should repay his owner-trainer, J. S. Shaw, handsomely for his patience Corofin’s Promise

Corofin, the winner of the third division of the Cashmere Plate, looks as if he may be well above the average. He had no difficulty in beating Pierre by three lengths and, even allowing for the fact that he improved a good deal with the race, Pierre’s subsequent winning efforts lathe first division of the Aylesbury Handicap on the second day and in the second division of the Longbeach Handicap last Saturday make Corofin’s performance a ve/y good one. Corofin is a bay geldir. ? by Coronach from Financiere, ’-»y Paper Money from Corsetiere, by Solferino from Dame Straitlace, a Kilbroney mare which ran second in the New Zealand Cup. Although Corofin’s dam was a sprinter, he has some good staying blood in his pedigree. Paper Money mares have already left some good stayers. Defaulter and Bruce, to mention two.

Pierre’s performances at tne meeting showed him to be a particularly smart galloper and a good deal more will be heard of him. He is a typical Royal Chief in appearance and is a smooth-actioned galloper that gets over the ground with a minimum of effort. It takes a good three-year-old to win against the older horses at this stage of the season, even in hack company. Pierre is a bay gelding by Royal Chief from Clarenceuser a halfsister by Clarenceux to that fine stayer, Count Cavour. He is trained at Trentham by W. G. Hawthorne for Mr C. J. McFarland, of Wellington, and it will be no surprise if he does them good service as a stayer later in the season. Sequoia, third in the third division, is another that may be seen to advantage over longer distances later in the season. A rich chestnut with four white stockings and a big white blaze, Sequoia is a big, showy-looking colt by Neptune from Oragon, a granddaughter of the famous Desert Gold, and was purchased by Mr N. H. Barlow as a yearling for 1300 guineas. He is a half-brother to the New Zealand St. Leger winner, Desert Fox, and his trainer, C. C. McCarthy, gave him plenty of time as a two-year-old. Bas Shown Good Form

As a two-year-old. Idle Jest showed that she was a smart filly, and her performances at the Hunt Club and the Grand National meetings enhanced her reputation. She won the second division of the Haldon Stakes in good style, and on the second day of the National meeting was a close second to Baccarat in the first division of the Woolston Handicap after having none the best of the running. She suffered similarly last Saturday when she ran fourth in the second division of the Longbeach Hack Handicap. Idle Jest races in the interests of her trainer, J. S. Shaw, and is a brown filly by Foxbridge from Aboyne, by Paper Money from The Linnet, a sister to the brilliant sprinter Song Bird. She is likely to prove a strong candidate for the John Grigg Stakes next month. Military Chief made only one appearance at the meeting and ran third in the second division of the Aylesbury Handicap on the second day, being only a nose behind the second horse. Peridot. In his three starts to date. Military Chief has registered two third placings, and he shows a good deal of promise. Military Chief is a chestnut gelding by Royal Chief from Military Maid, by Captain Bunsby from After Glow, an imported jnare by Sunstar, and is trained by C. G. Humphries for Messrs G. A. Lang and G. B. Walden, who also raced Military Maid with some success. Reefton Jockey Club Nominations close on Thursday at » P-m., for the Reefton Jockey Club's meetlnS on September 4th. Advt.

Bred in the Purple In the same race, the well-bred Eulogize finished only a nose behind Military Chief. Last Saturday Eulogize contested the mile Redcliffs Hack Handicap and finished sixth. Eulogize was wayward as a two-year-old, but he has been very patiently handled and is settling down to racing in grapd style. He is bred in the purple,, being by Finis from Praise, by Limond from Eulogy: and ranks as a halfbrother to Serenata, Representative, Russian Ballet, and Regal Praise, all of which proved good class horses. Eulogize is one of the few of Praise’s progeny Mr A. Louisson retained, and is trained by J. S. Shaw On Eulogize’s showings at Riccarton his owner If like l ” regret his decision. ' The three-year-olds mentioned above oy no means exhaust the list of likely types seen at the Grand National meeting Others that showed promise included Ballochmyle, Courier. Scuttle. Marut, Sir Abbot. and Prefect. Of these perhaps the unluckiest was Ballochmyle. which finished ' a very close fifth behind Resolute, Peridot. Military Chief, and Eulogize in the second division of the Aylesbury Handicap on the second day. after getting a bad check near th” five furlongs and another in the straight. Ballochmyle is a solid and well-grown but rather plainlooking black gelding by Balloch from Cute Melody, by Nigger Minstrel from the imported mare Miss Cute, the granddam of two good performers in Lambourn and Beaupartir. He is trained by J. C Tomkinson for Mr A. -N. Smith, of Dun edin. As he is a Decemhp’ bp is not being hurried Two-year-old Fillies Parade Several of the two-year-old fillies indicated that they were well forward when thev were given a run down the straight in the parade at Rieearton on Saturday In the first division only three Jumped off and Mrs N.
