CONCERN AT TRANSPORT AMENDMENT .BILL
« STEPPING STONE TO NATIONALISATION ” Concern at the proposals outlined in the Transport Law Amendment Bill, 19-8. was expressed by members of the Ashburton branch of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance at the annual meeting. Strong exception was taken to the set-up of the Transport Co-or-dination Council, which provided for only one representative for all the road and. service operators in a council of 14. Members thought that the road transport industry could give the Minister of Transport (Mr F. F. Hackett) practical assistance and advice in the many problems facing the industry, and therefore some reasonable representation should be .given to operators. Members felt that the proposals in the bill were a stepping stone to nationalisation. and that unless some definite action was taken to safeguard the industry, farmers, and others relyin<* on transport would suffer a serious setback. It was decided to ask the member of Parliament fo’- Ashburton (Mr R G. Gerard) to watch and safeguard the interests of the industry when the hill camp before. Parliament
