CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK

MINISTER TO GIVE ADDRESS

Children's book week will be marked this month with the most comprehensive series of special displays ever arranged in Christchurch for this annual event. The Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Library Association is sponsoring the programme to give children and their parents a complete insight into the library services and the many attractive new publications available to them. : Mr H. Winston Rhodes, senior lecturer in English at Canterbury University College, will introduce children’s book week with a preliminary radio talk entitled “Bringing Up Father.” This will deal with the responsibilities of parents in children’s reading. The Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs) will give an address on “Children and Books’’ at the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College on the evening of August 16. The college will stage a special display of children’s books suitable for school libraries.

The Canterbury Public Library will a’so have special exhibits in its children’s department. Arrangements are being made for class groups from manv schools to visit the librarv durin« the week. Thev will probablv be addressed by the librarian (Mr E. J. Bell) and his assistants The librarv has many young members: but it is desired to acquaint all children in Christchurch with the facilities offered educational and recreational reading.

The Country Librarv Service, at its rooms in “The Press” building, will cater specially for Parent-Teacher associations with book disrlavi and advisory services. Booksellers will also co-onerate.
