AWARD FOR TRAMWAY WORKERS
CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS AWAITED No date has yet been set for the hearing by a Conciliation Council of claims for a new award for the New Zealand Tramwaymen’s Union, and the current award, which has officially expired; has been extended pending an agreement on the making of a new award. The submissions of the union and the employers are awaiting the attention of the council. The employers’ proposals have been received by the Christchurch branch of the union and will be discussed early next week. It is understood that they are generally regarded with dissatisfaction by employees.
The Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs) said that, while he supported the bill, he thought the Drainage Board might have consulted him before introducing a bill which dealt with the district he represented. Government and Opposition members interjected to say that Mr Macfarlane was member for the district in which the board itself was situated. PARLIAMENTARY DAY (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. July 22. The future of the Waipoua kauri forest and the Tuberculosis Bill occupied the House of Representatives for most of to-day. In the afternoon the House debated at length the proposal that Waipoua should be made a national park, but no decision was made. The second reading debate on the Tuberculosis Bill was continued this evening. Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Opposition, Waitomo) claimed that a factor discouraging farmers from having regular tests of their herds was the compensation paid for condemned cows. Two Christchurch local bills were before the House. One, giving Sumner representation on the Christchurch Drainage Board, was passed. The other restores the power of the city council to transfer money from trading accounts, which was lost under an act of 1946 designed to give the council special powers for borrowing from these accounts. This bill was read a first time.
