RATES HELD TO-BE INVALID
RESOLUTION RESCINDED BY RABBIT BOARD From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, July 22. Rates approved at a special meeting of the Otaio Rabbit Board last Friday were reconsidered at a further special meeting in Timaru to-day held on the requisition of the chairman (Mr T. Sheehan). The board decided to rescind the resolution striking these rates after hearing a legal opinion that they were invalid. The legal opinion given to the meeting stated that, as the board had in some instances added to the differential rates fixed for the various districts in its territory an additional amount an acre to cover half the cost of clearing gorse,on the land of certain farmers, it had departed from the strict basis of rating as laid down in the Rabbit Nuisance Act, 1928. and amendments, which was the degree of rabbit infestation. Therefore, rates approved at the previous meeting were invalid. The board decided to rescind the resolution striking rates of 9d, 6d. sd, 4d. 3d, 2d. and Id an acre and gave notice of intention at its next meeting on August 11 to make and levy rates of Id, 2d, 3d. 4d, and 6d an acre.
