OWNER FOR LAND FOUND

REMAINS OF LARGE HOLDINGS

In the early days of South Canterbury the New Zealand and Australian Land Company owned a considerable area of land in what is now the Levels County. When the district was recently revalued it was found that two small areas were, unknown to the company, still in its name. Notice of its valuation has been forwarded to the compan v by the Valuation Department. These remains of the company’s operation in the district are both at Levels and consist of a piece of a closed road and a small area that has been used as a gravel pit reserve. In negotiations with the company some time ago the transfer of one area to the county had been proposed, but no action had been taken. Because of its small value, no such notices had been forwarded to the company, about two shillings being involved. The company remained unaware that it was still a property owner in the county. Steps are now being taken to have the two areas transferred to the county at the council’s costs
