CLAY BIRD SHOOTING
TOURNAMENT AT TIQIARU From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, July 22. The first of a series of clay bird tournaments to be held in Canterbury before the New Zealand championships in Christchurch, was held to-day by the Timaru Gun Club on its grounds at Washdyke. Shooters from as far afield as Ngaruawahia and Balclutha competed. The first and most important event of the day was a £lOO open 20-bird handicap, which attracted 48 competitors. Five competitors scored the possible and divided the prize-money. They were C. H. Haggle (Ngaruawahia), R. Maher (Ohi.ngaiti, Taihape), G. Malcolm and H. C. Walker (both of Hakataramea), and R. Whitham (Rangiora). The second match was a 10-bird sweepstake. There were 50 shooters, and possibles were scored by the following: R. Mcllwrick, H. C. Walker, C. Jones, J. Plamus, C. Benton, D. Mitchell, E. Benton, E. Green, Hutchinson, G. Malcolm, D. Dalton, C. H. Haggle, and R. Baker. In the shoot-off for the trophy, R. Baker (Timaru) was first, with J. Plamus second and D. Dalton third. The shoot-off was decided on the twelfth bird. Baker shooting 22 birds with the first barrel.
In the final match, a 10-bird sweepstake, there were five possibles—W. M. Holland, V. Hansen, F. L. Knowles, H. C. Walker, and D. Dalton. In the shoot-off for the trophy, W. M. Holland won on the eleventh bird, from F. L. Knowles.
