NEW COAL SEAM FOUND IN SOUTHLAND
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, July 22. Recent boring operations by the State Mines Department have proved a seam of coal, varying in thickness from six to 13 feet, of good quality, extending from the State mine to the Birchwood mine, across the flat. There is a little cover or overburden of gravel formation, which should be easily excavated. Stripping operations will shortly take place. It is estimated that more than 100,000 tons of coal could be produced from the area, and it should prove most profitable to the State. The daily output from the Ohai coalfields should be increased when production begins by at least 150 tons.
