FRENCH CABINET RESIGNS
DEFEATED ON BUDGET FOR ARMED FORCES SOCIALISTS REFUSE TO COMPROMISE PARIS, July 19. . The French Government led by Mr Robert Schuman has resigned, and the President (Mr Vincent Auriol) has. already started urgent talks with political leaders for the formation of a new Government. This follows the Government’s defeat on a vote of confidence when a Socialist amendment to reduce the military estimates was adopted by a majority of 90 votes. Before the vote was taken the Socialist Ministers announced their resignation from the coalition Cabinet. Mr Schuman asked to be allowed to make as many cuts as he found possible. The Socialists and Radical Socialists refused to agree. Mr Schuman said that if the Socialist amendment were adopted he would resign. Mr Schuman’s Cabinet has been in power for 10 months.
