AUCKLAND PORT DISPUTE
TRIBUNAL LIKELY TO SIT NEXT WEEK CHIEF JUSTICE MAY BE CHAIRMAN (P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 20. The tribunal to be appointed to inquire into the Auckland waterfront dispute is expected to sit in Auckland, but it is unlikely that the inquiry will open till early next week. Thursday had been tentatively fixed as the first day of the sitting, but a postponement is inevitable, because of the delay in making appointments, and witnesses have not yet been asked to attend. No members of the tribunal have been appointed by the Minister of Labour (Mr A. McLagan), but it is expected that the Chief Justice (Sir Humphrey O’Leary) will be chairman. The tribunal will include a representative of the Waterfront Industry Commission, a representative of the Union Steam Ship Company, and two representatives of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union. The union’s nominations of Messrs Alex Drennan, of Auckland, national vice-president of the union, and T. Hill, of Wellington, the national secretary, have not yet been approved.
