BALLET COMPANY
MAYORAL RECEPTION HELD A reception to Madame Rambert and members of her ballet was given yesterday by the Mayor (Mr E. HAndrews). Mr Andrews spoke of the enthusiastic reception which the ballet had received on its first night in Christchurch. “We don’t always show our enthusiasm, even though we. may be deeply thrilled. However, I think we are improving in this respect,” Mr Andrews said. Madame Rambert, in replying to the welcome given by the Mayor, said that it was a New Zealander (Mr D. D. O’Connor) who had been responsible for seeking the ballet out in England and bringing them to New Zealand with the co-operation of the British Council. Mr J. Bostock, representative of the British Council in New Zealand, said that the ballet was the British Council’s first love. “Can you blame the council,” he asked. Ballet, he believed, was a real factor in promoting goodwill among various countries. Mr J. L. Hay welcomed the company on behalf of the Civiq Music .Council, of which he is chairman The council was doing its utmost to develop the cultural side of Christchurch, Mr Hay said.
