RISE IN AUSTRALIAN COST OF LIVING
(Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 18. The cost of living index for Sydney rose 2.8 per cent in the quarter from March 31 to the end of June. This was caused by the recently-announced increase of 4s in the basic wage. The rise in lhe cost of living ha* brought the total increase in food, clothing, and rent costs in Sydney, since September 30, 1939, to 38.9 per cent. The Commonwealth Statistician has announced that during the last quarter the cost of living index rose in other cities as follows: Melbourne 1.8 per cent, Brisbane 2.8, Adelaide 2.9, Perth 1.4, Hobart 2.9.
