U.S. POLICY TOWARDS JAPAN

(Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 18. A private non-profit organisation to be known as “the American Council on Japan” has been formed in New York under the sponsorship of eminent Americans, including Mr Joseph C. Grew, who was United States Ambassador to Japan before the war. The organisation will “sponsor and adyocate an enlightened American policy towards Japan.” Mr Grew and Mr William R. Castle (who was Ambassador to Japan in 1930) will be honorary chairmen of the organisation. Other sponsors include Admiral Thomas C. Hart and Mr John Brabner Smith, who is special assistant to the chief American counsel at the Japanese war crimes trials. Among the council’s other objectives are “to keep before the American public the vital interest of the United States in a peaceful, prosperous, and friendly Japan,” to foster American interest in Japan with the aim of promoting mutually advantageous, and friendly Japan; to foster science, and athletics; to help the general advancement of commercial relations; and to stimulate consideration of contemporary Japanese problems.”
