N.Z. ASSOCIATION MEETING (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 19. A remit from Wanganui that entrants for the 1948-49 congress be graded into classes, not exceeding 12, and that the Swiss system be not applied, either as a means of grading or otherwise, was referred to at the recent annual meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association to affiliated clubs for their views. The Swiss •ystem was operated at the last annual congress. Wanganui contended that too much time Was occupied in finding the grading of players by this method, leaving insufficient time for actual tournaments and that this system did noUiairly place players in the true order of merit and resulted in a number of ties which had to be resolved by further means In view of the possibility of further matches by cable, a suggestion was put forward that a ranking list be compiled of the country’s leading 20 players to be adjusted after each congress. It was decided that as other factors besides placmgs at congresses had to be considered, uo action be taken in the meantime. It was agreed to endorse Mr R. G. Wade as a representative of the association during his forthcoming European tour. The Remuera Club, Auckland, forwarded the following notice of motion: “That the Bledisloe Cup be competed for on an inter-city, district, or sub-association basis, instead of individual clubs competing as at present.” The matter is to be referred to affiliated bodies. The principal officers elected were:— president. Mr A. J. Ratcliff (Wanganui); chairman. Mr A. T. Craven: secretary, Mr A. W. Gyles; '-easurer. Mr H. P. Yar{®ll; committee, Messrs A. T. Craven, J Morris, R. G. Wade, A Johnston, W. F. O’Shaughnessy, A. W. Gyles, and Cuff.
