RETIREMENT OF MR G. A. PASCOE
DIRECTOR OF INDUSTRIES DIVISION Tributes to the pioneering work of Mr G. A. Pascoe in many industrial fields were paid by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) when Mr Pascoe, the director of the industries division of the Department of Industries and Commerce, retired. Mr Pascoe was factory controller during the war. The Minister said Mr Pascoe pioneered the use of moulding boxes in foundries, he led the way in the use of machinery in dairy factories, and was largely responsible for designing the butter churn used in most New Zealand factories, he pioneered the plastics industry many years ago, and also the development and use of automatic lathes. After education at Christ’s College, Mr Pascoe was apprenticed to Andersons, Ltd., and later took a Diploma of Engineering at Canterbury College and became a registered mechanical engineer. From 1906 to ICO9 he was in charge of the firm’s bridge building and field operations. From 1909 to 1922 he was manager of the firm. After a trip overseas he returned to Christchurch, and in 1936 joined the Department of Industries and Commerce. He accompanied Mr Nash to the United Kingdom in 1936 on a trade mission, and visited Europe to investigate certain industries. As commissioner of the State Iron and Steel Department he later made another trip overseas. He had wide responsibilities as factory controller during the war.
