INCREASED WAGE ORDER WANTED
REQUEST BY BRANCH OF A.S.R.S. GOVERNMENT ASKED TO FREEZE PRICES <P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 16. A general order increasing wages by £2 a week is wanted by the Otahuhu branch-of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, the union’s delegates said at a meeting of the Auckland Trades Council last night The council decided to forward to the Federation of Labour the Otahuhu request for a Royal Commission to investigate prices, wages, profits and standards, and also the request that the Government meanwhile freeze prices. The Otahuhu delegate, Mr L. Reid, said the union thought the time had to P e S prices and unpeg wages. Workers had to work overtime to attain in a 60-hour week the same standard of living they had had on a 40hour week before the war. Workers were living on their savings. Withdrawal exceeded deposits both in the Post Office Savings and National Savings accounts.
