FEWER RABBITS IN SOUTHLAND
DETERIORATION IN SKINS NOTED (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, July 16. The rabbitskin season in Southland is almost finished, and has brought to light two important facts. One is that the rabbit population in the province has decreased considerably. It is estimated that the rabbit population is only half what it was 10 years ago. A leading exporter of rabbitskins puts the cause of this down to the work of rabbit boards, some c f which have almost cleaned out the rabbit in their particular areas. The second important fact is that the mild winters of the last two seasons have caused a deterioration in the quality of the skins. Because mere have been fewer good quality skins on the market this season, the demand for them has been great, and the prices offering , higher. Southland’s contribution of good quality skins has been small, and Central Otago has ruled the market in this respect. In addition to a keen inquiry from America, there is a big demand for good quality skins from hew Zealand furriers, because import restrictions have enabled furriers to import few furs from Canada. Apart from the* skins, there is an unlimited demand for rabbit carcases from the United Kingdom.
