SOUTH SEA ISLAND CRUISE
SHIPPING COMPANIES’ BALL The “R.M.S. Winter Garden” cruise to the island of ’“Kava Tabu” last evening for the combined shipping companies’ annual dance was greatly enjoyed by a large number of guests, who entered thoroughly into the fun and gaiety of a South Sea Island cruise. The beacon of a realistic lighthouse directed them to the ballroom where murals of blue lagoons, palms, coconut groves, old sea salts on drifting rafts, ila girls, and “R.M.S. Winter Garden” at her berth in port helped to create the illusion of a tropical island. Flags of the various shipping agencies and signal flags formed a canopy above the dancers, who were presented with colourful leis on their arrival, and who derived much entertainment from news in “Tabu Tattle,” copies of which were presented to them by the committee.
Honoured guests were Mr and Mrs W. A. Smith, Mr and Mrs S. A. Prankerd, Mr and Mrs G. Cole, Mr and Mrs R. L. Reid, Mr D. G. Hollebone, Mr and Mrs O. Guy, Mr and Mrs C. H_ Crombie, Mr and Mrs T. F. Gibson, Captain and Mrs J. Finn, Captain B. Moffatt, Mr and Mrs H. R. Williams, and the captains and officers of ships in port at Lyttelton. Members of the committee who had done everything possible to ensure that the cruise would be a memorable one for those who attended were: Misses B. Whittle and S. Albertson, Messrs A. A. S. Armour, S. Anderson, and B. Simon (Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd.), Messrs P. Perry (Canterbury Steam Ship Company, Ltd.), K. Wilson (New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd.), J.
