The Primate of New Zealand (Archbishop West-. Watson) is the guest of the Bishop of Rochester (the Rt. Rev. C. M. Chavasse) for the Lambeth Conference. The Bishop of Wellington (the Rt. Rev. R. H. Owen) will arrive in Christchurch on Saturday. On Sunday he will administer the Rite of Confirmation in the Diocese of Christchurch. Mr W. P. Packard, the Christchurch Rhodes Scholar who will leave for England early next month to continue his studies at Oxford University, received a • presentation from the staff and students of the geography department of Canterbury University College last evening. He is a graduate of the college, with a Master of Arts degree in geography, and has been a junior lecturer in the subject for about 18 months. Mr W. Adie, chief water supply inspector for the Christchurch City 'Council, has retired after 39 years’ service in the department. Mr C. E. Johnston, formerly of Ashburton, has been granted a bursary for two years to study at the Central School of Dramatic Art at the Royal Albert Hall, England. He will leave Wellington by the Waiwera on August 1. Mr Johnston, who is a son of the late Mr and Mrs R. R. Johnston, Ashburton, was a member of the Ashburton and Wellington Repertory Societies and toured New Zealand last year as an understudy with Whitehall Productions.

Mr George Ball, accountant at the Christchurch branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia, Ltd., has been transferred to the Pukekohe branch of the bank as manager. His position in Christchurch will be filled by Mr H. E. Read, formerly security clerk on the Christchurch staff.
